Siriusmo's Mosaik Out Today on Monkeytown!

It’s an especially good Friday for Berlin’s Siriusmo.

Mosaik. Out today on Monkeytown.

His debut LP Mosaik drops on Modeselektor’s Monkeytown imprint today.

He’s been dropping EPs and singles for a decade, and those dozen plus releases have all been building up anticipation for the record that comes out today.

I’ve ranted before about how Siriusmo’s sound is the true definition of “progressive house,” and from the snippets I’ve heard from Mosaik, he’s taking that concept into wonky directions.

There’s stuff on the album that sounds like dubstep, hip hop, and funk, all assembled with Siriusmo’s knack for brilliance.

In short, it’ll still make you dance, and it’ll still make you think. It’s all just a little bit more awesome.

The little sampling below should be enough to pique your interest if you haven’t already gotten a feel for Siriusmo. I’ll say it plain and simple, this kid is a phenomenon and he’s going to be huge in some way, even if it’s just with the nerds.

Berlin's Siriusmo Wants You to Feed His Meatmachine

It’s getting sirius.

Sirimanda/Feed My Meatmachine

Berlin producer and Modeselektor protege Siriusmo’s album is due out in a couple of weeks, and we just got another taste of what’s to come in the form of a little morsel.

“Sirimande/Feed My Meatmachine” includes the two titular tracks, as well as a couple of others, and this being Siriusmo, they are all awesome.

Siriusmo is a little more in touch with the club side of his brain for these tracks, but they all stay pretty weird, with sounds taking you by surprise left and right.

With this little release, Siriusmo is building even more hype, and judging from what we’ve heard from the upcoming Mosaik LP, he’s totally going to live up to it.

The kid has been on tour with Modeselektor of late, apparently overcoming a serious case of stage fright. We hear he’s been killing it on stage, so go check him out when he’s in your town.

New Album from Berlin's Funk Prodigy Siriusmo on Modeselektor's Monkeytown

Cover art for Siriusmo's Mosaik

We found Siriusmo not long ago and We Liked him in a Band kind of way. The synthesizer driven funk constantly reminds the listener of Stevie Wonder’s first work with the Moog and lays it into a caricature of the past two decades in dance music. Kitschy and irresistably catchy, Siriusmo can switch his mood from happy as hell disturbed, telling you the darkest rendition of the Three Little Pigs you’ve ever heard.

I’ve been collecting this Berlin producer’s discography of EPs, brief collections packed with edits Modeselektor, the well-known crew that has taken Siriusmo under their wing. Now, Modeselektor’s Monkeytown imprint will be releasing Siriusmo’s debut LP

!!!!!

I admit, I like his work so much that my jaw actually dropped open when I heard this news from Philadelphia’s DJ Paulito. Not many folks have heard of Siriusmo, making him an ideal obsession for record nerds that love it when something remains esoteric enough for them to teach it to the lesser knowledgeable. However, this album threatens to thrust him into the limelight, or whatever you call the attention of the slightly less nerdy.

What I love about Siriusmo is that he doesn’t follow the trends of the time. There’s no dubstep, two step, stuttery drip hop beats and glitch, samples from old movies or of the ethnic instrument du jour. It’s funk, pure and simple. Sometimes it’s over a four to the floor beat, and sometimes it’s not. Mo has a sense of sound and a sense of humor that combine to give you what Luke Vibert did under the Wagon Christ moniker with Tally Ho back in ’98, except this time the producer is younger and more cynical, and quite possibly more stoned.

Mosaik is out on February 25th on Monkeytown. Check back here for a review. A single called “Signal” is out January 14th. See and hear below!

Berlin's Siriusmo Makes You Dance and Think, Same Time

Why can’t all club music sound like this?

Siriusmo is playing at Motion Skate Park in Bristol on 12/10/10

As a kid, I remember someone handing me a disc and telling me this was “progressive house.” Having never heard the genre before, I imagined that ‘progressive’ applied here as it did with progressive rock; hypertechnical, warped, and for headphones only. What it ended up being was only a slight variation on regular house, and fairly lame house to boot. But the idea never left my head, and the concept was redeemed when I heard a record called Buckfunk 3000. Just because it’s dance music, doesn’t mean it has to be repetitive and mindless. That was 1998.

Siriusmo was just getting started back then. He began releasing 12″s on myriad labels in 2000, forming a style that takes every aspect of the term ‘Intelligent Dance Music’ very literally: The production is nuanced and though-provoking, the four-to-the-floor compatibility is constant, and Mo’s proficiency with the keys is apparent on every track. It’s funky, it’s catchy, and the sounds are processed to a semisweet pulp.

His sound landed him on Monkeytown records alongside Berlin’s Modeselektor in the late 2000s, the two acts becoming favored collaborators. Despite Modeselektor’s penchant for touring and performing live, Siriusmo stays true to the studio-rat lifestyle coined by solo electronic producers of the 90s. He reportedly hates playing live and only allows it to happen once in a while. That’s why, if you happen to be in Bristol, you should take this opportunity.

Siriusmo and Modeselektor are performing @ Motion Skate Park in Bristol, England on December 10th. Other acts include Hyetal, Moderat, Phaeleh, and Rossi B.
