French Beatmaker Häzel Rules the Playground
The soulful sounds of J Dilla affected all kinds of musicians, and Häzel’s new Playground EP is proof that Dilla changed things for French beatmakers. Hailing from Paris, Häzel created instrumentals for the likes of Drake and Slakah the Beatchild. Playground is his first solo release, and it’s the first record on his countryman Onra’s Catblock label.
In the tradition of jams built for the bedroom, the title track on Playground features vocalist Eyo saying unseemly things about the art of clothing removal. On every one of the six tracks, Häzel is channeling Dilla with popping snares and that bass so low that you feel it more than hear it.
