1000 Names You've Never Heard from Bulgaria
A couple of Bulgarian kids grew up listening to J Dilla, Madlib, and Dabrye, but they clearly couldn’t come up with a clever name for their own music project. And so 1000 Names was born.
The duo of Casio Blaster and 99 Mistakes are 1000 Names, and their sound is not quite the instrumental hip hop you would expect based on the influences mentioned. The broken beat element is there, along with ambient melodies of a sentimental nature. This is what it would sound like if Sigur Ros used harder beats in their music.
The group has described their sound as “emotronic,” which may have been in jest, but it’s actually a great description. It’s all electronic beats and textured percussion, and there’s a sad, emotional quality to the music that’s rather hard to describe.
1000 Names will drop a 7″ at the end of the month called 50 Elephants/How To Groove. The tracks are the soundtrack to a really vivid dream.
