Russia's WOLS Drops Unframed Works of Art
Ever since we told you about the ten best Russian producers of the modern age, we’ve been getting word of all the guys we missed. Turns out there are way more experimental beatmakers from the land of Russia than we initially thought.
WOLS consists of Modul and Feldmaus, who specialize in beats and ambient sound respectively. There are lyrics spattered around their new album Unframe, but those don’t sound like a person laid them down; more like a Cosmonaut who got lost in space decades ago and is somehow transmitting lyrics back to earth.
This is hip hop with a syncopated electronic twist, a bit like Tipper. It’s easier to nod your head to than a lot of the aforementioned guys on our Moscow Calling list. “Liquid Meets Discrete” is especially smooth, with a Mushroom Jazz-esque groove.
“Half Ain’t Enough” is the closing track on Unframe. Hear below. Womp womp.
