Santiago, Chile's Marvin Marlyn: A Young Square with Funk

Who’s named Marvin any more?

When I was 19, I was skipping class to go play ultimate frisbee. Marvin Marlyn is 19 now, and he’s using his time far more productively. The young cat from Santiago, Chile developed a taste for synth-drenched funky beats growing up and just recently started releasing mixes and tracks.

His In The Heart of My Walkman mix is a nice capsule of his influences.

There’s lots of that impassioned “wooooo-oooo-oooooo” vocalism going on, along with funky guitars and basslines that can only be played by a guy with long, thing dreads, large sunglasses, and hammer pants. You get the picture.

The picture of Marvin himself, on the other hand, is a bit different. He’s a skinny little Chilean kid with adorably dorky glasses, as you can see in three different expressions on the cover of his upcoming debut Soy Otro Tu.

The record is out on March 31st. Check out the aforementioned mix below to get a taste of his taste.
