Sounds from the Upcoming Prefuse 73 Album
The glitchy instrumental hip hop that’s so huge today can be traced back to a handful of influential artists and albums, one of which is Prefuse 73’s Vocal Studies and Uprock Narrative.
That was 2001, and it was nasty. Following that record, Guillermo Scott Herren dropped work under a number of aliases, but for layered hip hop, he stuck with Prefuse 73.
Album after album under this moniker began to show that the Prefuse 73 sound was something of a one trick pony. One World Extinguisher was a good follow up. With Surrounded by Silence, the repetition was somewhat obscured by guest vocalists. There were a couple more that were more of the same, and it got boring.
But now, Herren is back with a new release under the Prefuse 73 name, and from the sampler released by Warp Records, it sounds like he’s changing things up.
In the two and a half minutes of sound, there’s not much of a pronounced beat, and the ambient sounds that Herren is so adept with seem to take a new form, one that’s slightly sparser.
It’s hard to tell from a couple of minutes of music, but Prefuse 73 will always deserve a chance in your headphones because what he started with was so influential.
