Ras Muhamad, The Reggae Ambassador of Indonesia, Talks About His Music
From Babylon to Jakarta.
Raised in New York City and currently residing back in his home country of Indonesia, Ras Mohamad is the self proclaimed Reggae Ambassador of Indonesia. Ras claims the duty of bringing the pure sounds of reggae through Indonesia and beyond.
His style is straight up reggae and dancehall, except that he drops lyrics in his own form of Indonesian Patois. The rest of it is as authentic as it gets; upstroking guitar, heavy bass drums, and plenty of delay effect.
Ras got his start as a fixture in the New York hardcore scene in a band called The Laughing Amigos, composed of himself, two other Indonesians, and a French fellow. That’s how Ras got his first taste of performing live, something that he still considers a central part of his music.
Whiteboard Journal just did a little interview with Ras Muhamad and got his insights on reggae, reggae, and the burgeoning artform of Indonesian reggae. Enough reggae for ya?
