Antwerp's 40 Winks Keep The Beat Organic

Alright Belgium!

Not long ago, we liked the heck out of Belgian-Swahili hip hop artist Baloji. What I just came across is also from Belgium, but it’s not fusion rap by any means. Antwerp’s 40 Winks are a pair of producers staying true to the funky sounds of really organic hip hop.

They sound something like Herbaliser or early DJ Vadim; nice, groovy instrumental hip hop. This is the kind of stuff you would dig if you’re into the Mushroom Jazz series.

Since the early 200os, the duo has released three albums, the last of which got them enough recognition to land their tracks on compilations heard around the world.

40 Winks’ fourth album, It’s The Trip, is due out in mid April, and I’m expecting them to stick to their format of jazzy samples and clean, straightforward beats. If everyone else in the world is going to turn into Flying Lotus, it’s good to hear a couple of cats keeping the original sound of instrumental hip hop alive.
