UK Producer Eric Lau Drops "Star Trekking" from His Upcoming Album
Eric Lau as Captain Kirk.
I can admit that, as a child of 90s hip hop, it took me a minute to get used to the new stuttery direction of hip hop beats. Dilla started to take it in that direction, and cats like Flying Lotus took it even further, and today there are hip hop beats so staggered in rhythm that you can’t tell back from front. British-Asian producer Eric Lau keeps things boom bap, just like in the old days.
He just dropped a freebie track from his upcoming album Quadrivium, tweeting it with an exuberant “Happy Chinese New Year!” The track, “Star Trekking,” is a brief space voyage punctuated by some of Busta Rhymes’ “Yaw Yaw Yaws” that starts off the record. In a little video about the making of the track, Lau says, “I’m on a constant search for the patterns in sound that make attractive music.” It’s easy to tell that the search is going well.
