New Free Album "Titles" from Swiss Beat Maker AEED
In a little town called Lugano on the southernmost tip of Switzerland, a guy with a laptop is making some sick beats.
AEED’s work is pretty much all straight up instrumental hip hop, but each track represents a different way in which the style of beats has changed over the years. Some have a boom bap sound accompanied by glitchy sounds, while some are the kind of disjointed, jerky beats popularized by Flying Lotus (that name just keeps on popping up, I know). “Electricity Part 2” sounds like an updated version of a beat off Liquid Swords, while “Children of the Sun” sounds like a robot Madlib, and “Through the City” adds a little hand drum action to what would normally be a simple dubstep rhythm. The list goes on. Of the 20 tracks on Titles, each embodies a different style experiment.
This qualifies for the “Really Good New Stuff” category. It doesn’t stick to one style, it doesn’t rely on abstraction to be interesting, and it’s something you can bob your head and move your feet to. AEED might not be pioneering a style or using the craziest sounds, but he’s great within format. Hearing Titles is prompting me to dig back and check out some of his other work on Error Broadcast. Titles is available for a full free download here.
