New Album from Trip Hop Master of Cheese Wagon Christ
Trip hop fans get ready.
Luke Vibert, the man who favors cheesy over serious and funky over ambient, is back with a new album for 2011. Under the Wagon Christ moniker, the UK producer will release Tomorrow on Ninja Tune next month. Though he’s made excursions into drum n’ bass, acid, grime, electro, and every other beat style under the London clouds, Vibert is back to the hip hop based format he started out with on Tally Ho!
Tomorrow will be packed with quirky voice samples, blips, beeps, and old school breaks, assembled into cartoonish songs that shirk that abstract, off-beat direction that so much electronica is headed in today. Wagon Christ just makes beats that sound good to him, and he’s got great taste. Each of his albums preserves what made trip hop appealing when it broke out in the 90s, and brings in a taste of the influences he shares with his contemporaries like Aphex Twin and Squarepusher.
The first single off of Tomorrow is a just a taste of the crazy wonkiness we can expect from the album. Luke Vibert, under any alias, has never put out a bad record, and he has released a ton of work over the past couple of decades. This is another one to throw into the “Keepers” pile.
