Bands We Like: Parisian Disco Revivalist Breakbot

While most countries of the world are trying to leave behind any contributions to disco and 80s pop, Parisian producer Breakbot is unearthing these relic sounds and turning them into dance floor gold (yes, I can call it that, just listen to it). France has got a knack for making the cheesiest music sound irresistable. Whether its bands like Phoenix or Jamaica doing it with the band format or Daft Punk doing it with dance music, it always seems to get your head bobbing.

But Breakbot doesn’t have the glamorous image of those other French sensations. Instead of space age light shows, he rocks dirty T-shirts and that terrible beard-long hair combo all men are told to avoid in life. None of that takes away from his ability to turn any track into a Breakbot signature with funky bass lines and punchy drums crammed into the low end. It’s almost enough to warrant the single-arm robot dance move he often breaks out during his DJ sets…almost.

His debut album Baby I’m Yours just dropped early this year, and it serves up a helping of soul vocals and Stevie Wonder-esque keys parts that would make Royksopp blush. His recent remix of Matthew Dear’s “You Put a Smell on Me” packs the same kind of punch.

As his roster of remixes keeps growing, I’m hoping to hear something new from Breakbot in early 2011.
