Parisian Beatmaker Mr. Bibal Drops New Heat with Râ EP

Parisian kids can boom bap too.

The cover for Mister Bibal's new EP

Cameroon-born and Paris-raised Mr. Bibal’s sound switches from a muddle of diced voice samples to stark, minimalist beats on a dime. Like plenty of new school instrumental beat work emanating from cities all over the world, it has a distinct disregard for the need for lyrics. This French rendition has the sparse loop sequences of Dabrye’s One/Three, with crisp percussive sounds to match, along with a hint of Bibal’s classical piano training lending itself to the melodies.

Bibal’s style borrows from French-pioneered genres like musique concrete and early Moog composition, yielding something conceptual but far more accessible. Growing up on Stevie Wonder and George Clinton nurtured the funk factor in his sound. His 2009 debut Beats & Breaks, as well as its sequels Deux and Trois, swing as much as they stutter.

His newest EP just dropped, along with a little teaser video for his single “The Past,” which gives us a little glimpse of the home setup Bibal uses to create: an MPC, a MicroKorg, and an 8-track. And yes, we noticed the copy of Earth Wind and Fire’s All ‘N All that he’s clutching in his sleep. Must make for some funky dreams. For a 22-year-old, the kid’s got an old soul.

is available now on iTunes.
